Using Artificial Turf with Natural Stone Inlay
Many of us want a beautiful and lush yard. However, keeping it attractive and lively is time-consuming and involves plenty of work and regular maintenance. Installing STONEarch artificial turf instead of natural grass can totally change your perception of lawn care. It has plenty of advantages similar to what natural grass can offer, but with fewer upkeep requirements.
The installation can be a bit tricky, especially when laying them between pavers. However, your yard will look appealing and green for many years with minimal maintenance. Laying fake grass in between natural stones, like granite or travertine, can enhance the beauty of your landscape project. You will be able to create a visual interest in your outdoor space. Using artificial as a frame will make your natural stone inlays look like art.

How to Install Synthetic Turf with Natural Stone Inlays
Installing artificial turf with natural stone inlays is similar to turf lawn installation. However, there are some vital differences that you need to take into account. In most cases, the first step is to have your hardscape in place, then install the STONEarch synthetic turf around it. Laying your turf first before the pavers may likely damage it.
Step 1: Only use high-quality artificial turf
Artificial grass is available in several types and designed for various purposes. For instance, a putting turf has a stiff and short pile to allow golf balls. This feature ensures minimal resistance when golf balls roll across its surface. Likewise, it provides traction to ensure people don’t slip.
Meanwhile, turf for landscaping is comparable to natural grass. Its pile is longer and has tuft fibers in several tones of browns and greens to look like the varying shades of grass blades. You can contact us to know which kind is suitable for your needs. Our quality of STONEarch Artificial Grass is thick and dense, with a blend of light-medium-dark green strands to replicate the true look and feel of real grass.
Step 2: Prepare the surface area
Before installing the artificial turf, plan out and clean the area you will cover. Remove debris using a garden rake, and make sure all water pipes and cables are below digging depth. There should not be any obstructions once you start your landscaping project.
Step 3: Sub-base installation
Sub-base is essential when installing synthetic grass in your backyard since it helps with proper drainage. However, compacting it can be challenging when installing between stone inlays. You may use a hand tamp as long as it can fit within the margins. If not, you may use a brick.
Lay the sub-base between the natural stone inlays. As a rule of thumb, the depth should be around 2-4 inches however may vary based on site conditions. You should always consult with a professional landscape contractor when you have any questions. Then, work on compacting the sub-base. Position the brick over your sub-base and hit it using a hammer.
Step 4: Artificial turf installation
Place sections of the artificial grass and align it over the stones. Ensure that the grain lines of all sections are lined up. Placing the turf’s grain in opposite directions will result in a disjointed-looking grass.
Let it sit on the landscape for about 1-4 hours. Doing so will enable the landscape material to settle and fit to the ribbon space. As it settles, the outline of the pavers will be visible. If there are no clear outlines, walking between the stones can help.
Step 5: Secure and cut the turf
Nail the turf into the sub-base between the stones if installing it over soil to avoid any movement as you work. Use the outline as your guide.
Use a boxcutter or sharp knife to cut around the stones. Make sure to hold it at a 45-degree angle while doing so. There should be an 1/8-inch gap between the synthetic turf and your hardscape. Anything less than this will result in the turf bunching up along the stone, while a bigger gap will make it look ill-fitting.
Once all sections are secure, make an incision between the stone’s edge and the turf. Follow the hardscape’s edge and cut the grass slowly.
Step 6: Secure and close the seams
Hiding the seam can make a difference on the end result of your project.
Once all the sections are cut, check and trim any excess edges. Ensure there are no visible gaps and everything lines up perfectly. Use a seam tape and glue to secure the seams. Remove all the nails and proceed with the infill process.
Step 7: Infill
After you’re done with the turf trimming, securing, aligning, and joining, it’s time for the infill installation and other final touches.
Infill is usually a fine sediment, like rubber, cork, or sand. Its purpose is to keep the artificial turf blades upright. On top of that, it cools down your lawn and ensures proper drainage. Infill in turf is vital since it helps with its upkeep and longevity.
Put a layer of infill between the hardscape. Do this carefully and slowly. Then, use a stiff brush or rake to brush the fibers upright. Avoid raking or brushing excessively to prevent the edges from lifting.

5 Benefits of Using Artificial Turf over Real Grass
You’re making a smart choice with our artificial turf. It’s the most suitable for your yard as it offers many convenient benefits.
- Easy Maintenance
- Perfect All-Year Round
- Cost Effective
- Eco-Friendly
- Pet-Friendly
Easy Maintenance
It’s a very convenient alternative since it does not need too much care. Unlike natural grass, you don’t mow, fertilize, and water it. The most you need to do is to hose it down once every couple of weeks to get rid of litter, debris, and dust build-up. That means you’ll have more time to spend on other important things or enjoy your garden instead of mowing the lawn.
Perfect All-Year-Round
Maintaining a pristine natural lawn means hard work. All your effort during springtime can easily go down the drain once summer rears its ugly head and your beautiful grass succumbs to drought.
You don’t have to deal with this issue with synthetic grass. Regardless of the weather, it will always look aesthetically pleasing. Sunlight, rain, or heavy snow will not ruin its good looks. It will stay neat and green the entire year.
Cost-Effective
If you add up the cost of maintaining natural grass over time, from weed killers and grass feed to rakes and lawn mowers, it becomes costly. On the other hand, you’ll only need water and detergent to clean synthetic turf in its entire lifespan, making it more cost-effective.
Eco-Friendly
Maintaining synthetic grass requires less water. You only need to give it a good rinse every now and then to remove debris build-up. Hence, it significantly lowers water wastage.
Lawn mowers emit carbon monoxide, which is dangerous to your body and the atmosphere. On the other hand, fertilizers contribute to water pollution. Switching to fake grass means you no longer have to use pesticides and chemicals that harm the environment.
Pet-Friendly
Do you have pets that love to spoil and dig up your garden? Perhaps it’s time to consider switching to artificial turf. It is the more hygienic option since most are treated with polyethylene, making them impervious to discolouration stains.
Furthermore, it is easier to clean, and urine and pet litter will not affect it. All you need is water and detergent to clean any animal waste. Likewise, they are durable, so you have a problem with your four-legged friend chewing or digging on it. You’ll also find that your fur baby will enjoy playing on it as much as the real grass.

6 Different Types of Natural Stone Finishes
The structural design aesthetic of your home is vital. And one of the best building materials today is natural stone. Landscaping with STONEarch natural stones can provide your outdoor space with a cohesive look. You can use our beautiful products in numerous ways, including steps, firepits, retaining walls, decorative accents, and a whole lot more.
To ensure you have the proper stone for your landscape project, you have to consider several factors. These include colour, suitability to your project, and finish.
Natural stone finishes come in various types, which may confuse some people. In this article, we’ll provide you with an overview of these finishes, their advantages, and how you can incorporate them into your design.
Natural Stone Finishes
The six most popular finishes in outdoor natural stone includes:
- Honed
- Sandblasted
- Flamed
- Flamed and Brushed
- Flamed and Waterjet
- Natural Cleft
Honed
Stones with a honed finish have a satin smooth, even, flat, and consistent matte surface from sanding and grinding using abrasives. This finish provides the stone with a natural and contemporary look with a little light reflection. Because of the honing process, the shades of the material may look lighter than those with a polished finish and not reflective. Nevertheless, the natural stone’s overall depth and colour are still maintained.
Honed natural stone finishes, such as STONEarch Ivory Mix (also available in tumbled finish), are most suitable for high-traffic, low-maintenance applications. They are often used for walkways, floors, stairs, and other areas that receive plenty of foot traffic. Also, you can use stones with this finish in facades, bathrooms, as wall coverings, and on countertops.
One of the reasons people choose stones with a honed finish is that it is less abrasive on bare skin (which does make the surface a little more slippery) but also makes it the best choice for any indoor-outdoor living space, covered kitchen areas, covered terraces or porches, or even an indoor pool. This does not mean it is not suitable for traditional landscape applications, as many clients will also use our STONEarch Ivory Mix or STONEarch Gray Mix travertines for a walkway or a typical pool deck as shown below. On top of that, a honed finish is more scratch-resistant. And if the stone does get etchings or scratches, they will not be noticeable.

Sandblasted
Sandblasted is a natural stone finish with an anti-slip, finely textured surface. STONEarch Indus Gray comes with sandblasted finish and is a great choice for poolside patios, bathrooms, and areas that always get wet.
Stone craftsmen use water or air pressure to spray the stone with a combination of beads and sand. The treatment gets rid of saw marks on the stone, providing it with a smooth surface. Sometimes, the process gives the landscaping stone an almost invisible fine circular imprints. Furthermore, some utilize this method to carve various patters or designs into the tiles.

Flamed
One of the most popular natural stone finishes is flamed finish for use outdoors because of its slip-resistant property. The stone’s surface is applied with a high-temperature flame to achieve this finish. This approach produces a thermal shock, forcing the natural crystals of the stone to fracture to appear on the surface, providing a rich shine to the natural stone in sunlight. As a result, you’ll get a stone with a beautiful surface that’s very textured, such as STONEarch Gray and STONEarch Butterfly.
You can usually see this finish on granites. Likewise, this type can hide the stone’s shade variations and imperfections on the surface.

Flamed and Brushed
Once the textured flamed finish is achieved, craftsmen can apply a brushed finish. They do this by using brushes, wheels and other tools. Stones with a brushed finished feel smoother to the touch. Likewise, it provides the material with a worn and casual aesthetic.
Moreover, there are different levels of brushing that can be done. Our team of expert consultants can advise landscape architects and designers for commercial projects on the right level of brushing to ensure anti-slip surface that is not too abrasive on bare skin.
Also, other natural stone finishes can be combined with a brushed finish, including flamed. A natural stone tile with flamed and brushed finish has a smoother nooks and crannies. It looks more timeless and feels softer to the touch. This is a good option if you want to achieve an antique-looking flooring that seems like it’s been walked on for many years.
Flamed and Waterjet
Some natural stones that go through the flaming technique may change their colour. When this happens, they are blasted with a waterjet.
Blasting the stone with a waterjet enhances its character and colour. Extreme high-pressure jet of water is focused throughout the surface of the stone, eroding it. It then breaks the crystals and opens the stone’s pores, resulting in a texture identical to flamed finish. The method is only successful in certain types of natural stones such as our STONEarch Onyx Black, which is also available in flamed and brushed.

Natural Cleft
You can commonly see natural cleft finish on slate and sandstone. A good example of this finish is our Flint sandstone, showing off the stone’s natural cleft texture and surface to its full advantage.
The surface of these natural stones are slightly uneven. These natural ridges occur when they are separated from the earth. Hence, natural cleft finish naturally occurs during quarrying. It is not created. You may find some limestones and granites on the market with heavy clefting, suitable only for paving and wall installations.

Choosing Between Natural Stone Finishes
Practicality is a top consideration when choosing the type of natural stone and its finish for your project. For instance, if you want your front steps to have a polished marble look, consider a honed finish. You can easily achieve that classic look while having a more texturized and slip-resistant surface.
Meanwhile, a flamed and brushed finish can provide your design with character. For flooring, your best options are sandblasted, natural cleft, and flamed finishes. This is especially true for outdoor areas, such as your deck or patio, that receives high foot traffic.
All natural stone finishes have their own pros and cons. The key here is to find the perfect balance between practicality and which one will make your design stunning. If you’re still unsure which finish is suitable for your application, contact our team, who is more than willing to help you out.

Budget Natural Stones For Landscape
Designing a beautiful and functional outdoor space with a patio doesn't have to drain your bank account. There are several budget-friendly options to consider when selecting patio pavers that will maintain quality and style.
When deciding on the right patio material, factors like cost, durability, style, and ease of installation (mainly for DIY projects) play a crucial role. We've compiled a list of some of the most affordable patio stones to help you in your project:
1. Natural Stone

Natural stones are not only stunning but also remarkably durable. They are scratch-resistant, weather naturally to a non-slip surface, and stand the test of time. While natural stone may have a slightly higher upfront cost than plain concrete slabs, its longevity and low maintenance make it a wise investment. Natural stones age gracefully, even in harsh weather conditions, and are less likely to crack or disintegrate over time. So, when considering the cheapest patio stones, factor in the initial price, quality, and long-term value.
The Black Limestone, from the STONEarch natural stones collection, stands out as an affordable and popular choice.
2. Pebbles

Pebbles are a cost-effective, versatile, and low-maintenance option for your outdoor patio, with the added benefits of easy installation and a natural, charming appearance. These low-cost landscape materials require minimal setup or hardening, making them ideal for DIY projects. Pebble patios can take on any shape you desire and can last a lifetime with proper care.
Explore our polished pebbles available in either 1-ton bags or individual 25-kg bags for added value.
3. Armour Rock

Armour rock is another economical choice for your patio. This naturally quarried stone is tough and can withstand erosion and everyday wear. Available in various shapes and sizes, these stones allow you to create striking features like entrances, retaining walls, and rock gardens. Armour rock complements natural stones like STONEarch Slate Gray and STONEarch Dove, making it a versatile and budget-friendly option.
4. Concrete

Plain-poured concrete slabs are among the most affordable patio stones. While they may seem unexciting, you can opt for stamped patterns or use coloring agents to achieve a more natural appearance. Concrete is known for its clean and consistent look. However, Proper care is essential for concrete patios to prevent fading, cracking, and wear over time. While they offer versatility, they may require replacement after 5-10 years of use. It requires regular maintenance, including reapplying coatings every few years to maintain its color. It's best suited for frost-free regions where temperatures don't drop below freezing.
5. Bricks
For a classic and timeless look, consider brick patio stones. Salvaged bricks, in particular, can be more budget-friendly and eco-friendly. They may even offer a unique rustic appearance, though they're often priced at a premium due to their character. Brick patios provide good drainage. They are porous, allowing water to flow easily and preventing erosion. However, they may break or crack under extreme conditions and are limited in color. Despite this, arranging bricks in various patterns can create a distinctive and appealing look for traditional and rustic homes. If you're working on a project for a traditional, rustic home, the timeless cobblestone appearance is a superb choice.

Selecting the right patio pavers involves considering your budget, maintenance preferences, and the desired look for your outdoor space. With these budget-friendly options, you can create an attractive and functional patio without exceeding your financial constraints. Remember that investing in durability and longevity can save you money in the long run.
